What is three planet living?
We’ve only got one planet and we need to treat it more gently if we want to survive. Our over-consumption of materials and use of fossil fuels means we in Scotland are living as if we had three planets to take resources from and dump our wastes on.
How many planets will we need by 2050?
Today, our global footprint is about one and half time the Earth’s total capacity to provide renewable and non-renewable resources to humanity. If nothing changes, in 35 years, with an increasing population that could reach 9.6 billion by 2050, we will need almost three planets to sustain our ways of living.
What does one planet living look like?
Imagine a world where everyone, everywhere lives happy, healthy lives within the limits of the planet, leaving space for wildlife and wilderness. We call this One Planet Living, and we believe it’s achievable. But globally we are living as if we have more than one planet.

If everyone would live like me like I did in 2017, we would need a shocking 3.5 Earths according to the Global FootPrint Network. This is an international nonprofit organization that aims for a sustainable future where all people have the opportunity to thrive within the means of one planet.

If we now look again at the average American footprint – two-thirds of that is made up of carbon emissions. This means that for the four Earths we would need if everyone consumed like an American, more than two-and-a-half of those would be needed just to absorb carbon dioxide.

For a simple model, use acrylic to paint your planet with its predominant color.

Aims and Objectives The project aims to demonstrate that sustainable living is possible, by creating a network of green neighbourhoods where it is easy, attractive and affordable for people to live a healthy, happy lifestyle within a fair share of the planet’s resources.
